What to wear for your portrait session!

When it comes to picking out outfits for your portrait session, it can become super confusing and overwhelming really quick. Even I used to have trouble picking out outfits because I didn’t know where to start.

I would stare into my closet and start throwing things together… literally. I took everything I owned, threw everything on my bed, and tried to figure out which outfits would look good. And when all else failed, I would open pinterest and try to match an outfit I saw on there. It would take me FOREVER and I knew there was an easier way to go about it.

I love sending my clients customized style guides that helps them prep for their session and I decided to share with you 6 tips that I send to my clients to ensure picture perfect outfits that photograph beautifully every single time!

The best part is that these tips are perfect for ANY type of session whether that be family, engagement, senior, maternity, etc!

  1. Things to avoid: Bright neon looking colors, flip flops, baseball hats, graphic tees, tennis shoes, logos, and sunglasses.
  1. Alternate the Heaviness: If you decide to wear a navy blue top and black jeans… it’s going to look super heavy and dark. Instead go with white jeans or a khaki color. If this is a couples shoot, one can wear dark pants, and the other can wear lighter colors. It makes everything look balanced.
  1. Patterns: If you decide to wear a pattern, make sure it’s not crazy distracting or really bright in colors. Instead go for simple patterns that are easy on the eye. The pictures attached below have some patterns included that are perfect for photos!

For couples: If one person decides to wear a pattern… the other should stick to solid colors!

  1. Neutral Colors: light blues, tans, creams, whites, grays, and blushes always photograph like a DREAM! This makes your photos look really soft and bright!
  1. Dresses: If you decide to wear a dress, make sure you’re comfortable! If you’re uncomfortable, it will show in your photos and you’ll constantly be fighting with it the entire session! Dresses with light fabric that allows the wind to pick it up and blow it around makes your image look like you stepped out of heaven!

6. Be Comfortable: Pick clothes you’re comfortable in! If you’re not comfortable, you will be fidgeting the entire time trying to get comfortable and believe me this will show in your photos!
