Wedding Planning 101

Controlled Exits

August 6, 2024

Post Date:

Wedding exits have become one of my favorite things to photograph over the past couple of seasons. They’re such a fun way to show off the end of your day and give your gallery that complete and celebratory feel.

There are so many ways to get creative with this. I’ve seen everything from bubbles, champagne, glow sticks, confetti, and my personal favorite, sparklers!

One of the greatest advantages of a controlled exit is that we can capture these moments in the middle of the reception, rather than at the very end. This means you don’t have to pay for an extra 2-3 hours of coverage. Plus, party dancing photos can become repetitive, so this approach ensures we make the most of our time together, capturing unique and dynamic shots.

So, right after the main events are over, like cake cutting, parent dances, toasts, etc., we gather your bridal party and close family members and stage “fake” exit photos right outside. (This is SO much easier than having every single guest come out and line up.) It takes about 5 minutes to capture this, and then everyone goes back inside to the party!

Benefits of a Controlled Exit

  1. Variety and Creativity
You can run through your exit line multiple times and do different poses, so we can get a ton of variety.
  2. Picture-Perfect Moments
If we waited until the wedding was over to take these pictures, there’s a good chance everyone might not look their best. (We don’t need anyone intoxicated trying to handle a sparkler!)
  3. Cost-Effective
It saves you money! Like I said above, there’s no reason to pay extra for your photographer to stay until the end of the night. I get that weddings are an investment, and paying for hours upon hours of dancing photos just isn’t ideal for your budget.
  4. Intimate and Special
By just having your bridal party and close family members as part of the lineup, not only will you be surrounded with the people you’re closest to, but the rest of your guests can stay inside and join the party. We can capture these pictures quickly, so I promise they won’t even know you’re missing!
  5. Look Your Best
You haven’t partied all night, meaning your hair and makeup will still be intact!

The party doesn’t stop, you’ll only be gone for maybe five minutes, the timeline or order of events doesn’t get interrupted, it saves you money, and you get some kick-ass photos to end your big day. I call that a win-win-win-win-win!
